When I was in junior high I had to keep a vocabulary journal. Not my thing. It has always been an area that I have been weak in and it is no different today. It is hard for me to accurately and succinctly give a definition or explanation of words especially theological terms used in the Bible and throughout history. So I thought I would start focusing on one word or concept a week.
Some words will be more simple and some will be more challenging, but hopefully it will help me be able to give a better answer for the things I believe (1 Peter 3:15).
This week I am starting with "godliness."
Thomas Watson said that godliness "is the sacred impression" or stamp of God in man. I like that because it means the more I grow in godliness the more that stamp will become visible.
Though godliness is a work of God in my life he wants me to exercise it through a variety of means. He has chosen things like prayer, his word, the godly examples of other believers, worship, and difficult circumstances to work in and through my life and the life of his people.
To borrow from Watson (yet again), “A godly woman is a heavenly woman; heaven is in her, before she is in heaven."
