Are you familiar with the hymn “We Sing the Mighty Power of God” by Isaac Watts? Here is one of the verses:
I sing the mighty pow’r of God, that made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.
Beautiful isn’t it? I love to ponder the power of God. His omnipotence is more than fascinating, it’s awe-inspiring. It simultaneously induces fear and calms the soul.
With his power he made man and animal, solar systems and landscapes. By his power he directs the weather and sustains all life, he raises the dead and directs the angels. It is through his power that dead souls are made alive and through it he directs every detail of history.
Understanding and embracing the omnipotence of God is important because the Lord is OUR God.
"For this God is OUR God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end."
Psalm 48:14 (emphasis added)
This is the craziest thing. That the one to whom all things are subject, whom even inanimate objects obey-- he belongs to us and we belong to him. Not only is he our God but he uses his power for us.
While he can create the wildest storms he can also gently place peace in our hearts. He can flood the whole earth and send fire from heaven yet he softly corrects us and leads us in paths of righteousness.
Nothing is too hard for God for he holds all power! He can take away difficulty or he can give joy, real joy, in the midst of it. With his power he can heal but he can also give us contentment in the midst of illness.
Omnipotence may build a thousand worlds, and fill them with
treasures; Omnipotence may crush mountains into dust, and
cause all the seas to evaporate, and destroy the stars, but
Omnipotence cannot do one unloving thing toward a believer.
When we catch a glimpse of God’s greatness through his power it becomes absurd that we should look to our own strength. What power do I really hold compared to God? How can my strength serve me? It can’t! But Christ’s power in me can accomplish unthinkable things.
Expect your God to do mighty things in your life and the life of your family. Dwell on what God is capable of turning you into. Dream wildly and then remember that God’s power can do more that we can even imagine.
Dwell on his omnipotence, the mighty power of God. Know it well! And then remember that this is YOUR God.
