When I look at my children I catch glimpses of myself in some of their mannerisms, the words they choose, and the way they pronounce those words. I see myself or my husband in some of their personalities, the things they like, and the things they fear. Sadly I also see many of my sinful habits being passed down to them as well. Children are often little replicas of their parents.
This is similar to God and man. Every human on earth that has ever lived or will ever live has been created in the image of God (imago dei) and therefore we possess some of God’s attributes. These are called his communicable attributes and in 2 Pet. 1:4 we are told that we are "partakers of the divine nature."
While God possess these attributes in full measure with all perfection, we only possess them in small measure and very imperfectly. What are some of these communicable attributes? Here is a small list.
This is amazing because God is --there is no other God--and yet we share in some of his attributes. It also shows us once again the value each human being has.
As children of God we look a little like our God. But he is not done with us yet. He continues to make his likeness shine in us through the ministry of the word and the work of his Spirit. And one day his image will be perfected in us and we will look his his Son in glory.
