How many of us really take time to study the work and person of the Holy Spirit? I am ashamed to say that I don’t, at least not as much as I should. Yet He is part of the Trinity and plays a critical role in our salvation and our Christian walk.
There are number of works the spirit performs. Here are just a few:
Illumination - It is the Spirit’s job to reveal truth and understanding to us as we read and study the scriptures. He also helps us apply the truth to our lives (John 16:3).
The work of the Holy Spirit in the process of interpretation is not to add information, but to give to us the discipline to study and the humility to accept the truth we find without twisting it.
Apart from the Spirit, [the Bible] cannot quicken, nor sanctify, nor comfort. It may be read constantly, and searched deeply, and known accurately, and understood partially, and quoted appropriately. Yet, left to its own unassisted power, “it comes but in word only” (1 Thes. 1:5), producing no hallowing, no abiding, no saving results.
Justification - This is a legal act by which our sins are no longer held against us.
“The Spirit is the agent that effects justification in the life of the believer. The Spirit applies Christ‘s work of reconciliation to us in order to transform our hostility toward God into fellowship with Him.”
Sanctification - This is the process by which we become more and more like Jesus. Romans 8:8-12 says that because we have the Spirit we are able to kills the ways of the flesh and live righteously. It is because of the Holy Spirit in us that we can fight sin.
“Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us, and the Holy Spirit has been sent to prepare us for that place.”
At salvation we are given a promise, a seal, which promises that our salvation can never be undone, it guarantees eternal life. This seal is the Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13)
The Holy Spirit also intercedes for us (Rom. 8:26-27), he comforts us and gives us assurance that we are the children of God (Rom 8:15-16).
The study of the Holy Spirit is huge and must we really should give attention to it. What comfort it should be to us that we have the Holy Spirit living in us. His power raised Jesus from death and now he lives in us and give us this same power to fight sin.
