Not too long ago I felt like I had slipped into some kind of funk. The days seemed gloomy, not only outside my window but also inside my heart. I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what was pulling me down. Life seemed joyless, peaceless, frustrating, overwhelming, boring and mundane.
You know, you can find yourself in a dark spot without tragedy turning your life upside down. Darkness can slowly creep in like a cool fog until it has filled your heart.
And Satan rejoices when this happens, because during these times I am useless for the Kingdom, or so it seems. I don’t do a good job encouraging my husband or pointing my kids to Jesus. Satan loves that. I forget what the providence of God really means and ignore his word. I become discontent and unhappy. I am sure this makes Satan cheer because my quest for godliness seems to have come to a screeching halt.
The path to godliness is not a “flowery” path full of ease and sunshine. Though I really wish it was. It is instead an uphill road filled with difficulty, pitfalls, enemies, thorns, confusion, and sometimes darkness.
What I am learning is that there are treasures to be found in the darkness. Treasure which we already possess but have either forgotten about or gotten so used to that they don’t seem like treasures anymore.
The Brightness of the Cross - The cross and all it stands for never shines more brightly than when we are in the dark. It is a beacon calling us back to our hope, our righteousness in Christ, our forgiveness, our acceptance, and our first love.
The Power of God’s Strength - God’s power is immeasurable. Through it he made everything out of nothing and will, again, create a world without sin through his power. His power sustains life and changes hearts. It is his power that draws us to him and holds us tightly in his hand so that no matter what we cannot be lost.
The Priceless Word of God - God’s word is not only a weapon that we are to use as we deal with this world and fight against the lies and schemes of the devil. It is also a treasure through which we can see beauty in the ugly, joy through the tears, and hope when all seems hopeless. The word of God is a “lamp,” a bright light that guides us along the way. (Psalm 119:105)
God’s Protection - Those who fear the Lord are his precious jewels and he will not let them rot by the side of the road. Mal 3:17
This truth is very comforting when we are confused and life seems foggy. We are his precious possessions--despite our sin, despite our weakness, despite our rebellion. He loves us still, and has sworn to keep us.
While Satan wants to make me feel like I am all alone, that God is somehow shaking his head at me in disappointment, and that my kids will now turn into rebellious hellions, God promises to not only walk with me but he also goes ahead of me and makes the crooked path straight. This may mean that he will remove the obstacle or it will mean that he will help bend my will towards his and have me go over or through the obstacle.
He is always there to point out the way in which I should walk and to cheer me on through his word when I feel like laying down in the middle of the road and giving up. This means even in the midst of ugliness, uncertainty, darkness or pain he is my light and my song.
If you’ve had some dark and dreary days know that God is still with you and will not abandon you. He is the “Hound of Heaven” who radically pursues those who belong to him. He is there to support you (Josh. 1:9) and will use the dark times to teach us and grow us. He will encourage us and rescue us in the day of trouble. He will show us treasures in the darkness.
“Blessed be God for every burden and every exercise; and above all things, blessed be God for His grace which supports the soul in, comforts it under, and eventually brings it out of all its trials, landing it eventually on the happy shore where tears are wiped from off all faces!
