Little kids always think that their dad is the strongest. Their dad knows everything, can lift anything, and fix whatever is broken. My little Madeline will jump into her daddy’s arms with full trust that he will catch her, she has NO fear. And Kilian always wants his dad to hold him when he gets hurt. There is safety and comfort in the arms of a father.
But I am not a child and I can no longer have my dad envelop me in his arms. Fathers grow older and more fragile. Some grow ill and need care while others pass away. The arms of earthly fathers fade away.
But the arms of God are different.
Unyielding arms for when I am fearful
"The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms!"
When my life rages like a wild storm I can be sure that I am safe in the arms of God. Temptations may lurk in unforeseen places; people may hurt me; my sins may feel like they are crushing me; and my daily life may seem overwhelming. But I can be confident that I am being protected by the unyielding arms of God.
Steady arms for when I am blind
For I, the Lord your God,
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.”
There are days when I can hardly decide what we are having for dinner let alone figure out bigger issues in life. Some seasons look foggy and I can barely see where I am going. There is much that is unknown as I look ahead, and it is especially during these moments that I need to hold tight to the arm of God who will lead me through these dark and unsure times. Nothing is hidden from his sight. He knows where he is leading me, and I am safe holding his hand.
Gentle arms for when I am weary and weak
"He shall gather the lambs in His arms,
and carry them in His bosom"
The Lord is gentle and careful. Isn't that great! Because there are days when I am sad and weary of the sin and brokenness in the world and in my own heart. When anxiety has gotten to me because I have taken my eyes off of Jesus. God in his kindness will still hold me in his strong and loving arms .He soothes my weary heart and offers peace if I simply rest in him.
"Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He;
I am He who will sustain you.
I have made you and I will carry you;
I will sustain you and I will rescue you!"
God promises that when I am at my weakest, even at the end of my earthly life he is there with me to sustain me, and carry me through life and into eternity.
"I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever!
No one will snatch them out of My hand!"
Surely neither death nor anything in life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things that may come tomorrow, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the powerful and loving arms of God.
His arm is omnipotence. ‘In the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength’ (Is. 26:4). His is an arm that can never be broken! Out of this clasp—we can never be taken. - J.R. Miller
